Cherry Blossom Season in Kungsträdgården, Stockholm
Cherry blossom season in Stockholm is short, magical, and almost unreal. This year, I decided to experience it in the most peaceful way possible. On 22 April 2026, at 5:30 AM, I walked into Kungsträdgården, the heart of the city’s cherry blossom celebration, hoping to capture the golden sunrise light with absolutely no crowd around me. It turned out to be one of the most unforgettable mornings I’ve had in Sweden.
For the wide and mid‑range compositions, I used my Sony A6500 paired with the Sony 18–105mm f/4 G OSS, which gave me the flexibility to frame both the cherry blossom canopy and the surrounding park. For the detailed close‑up shots, I switched to the Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro, a lens that captures incredible texture and depth.

Why I Went at 5:30 AM
Cherry blossom photos are beautiful at any time of day, but there’s something special about the first light of morning. The soft golden glow, the quiet streets, and the empty park create a completely different atmosphere. I wanted:
Golden sunrise light
Less people in the frame
Fresh blossoms after a cold night
A calm, personal moment with nature
So I decided to go before sunrise, and it was absolutely worth it.
The branches fill the foreground with dense clusters of flowers, while the soft sunlight filters through the petals, creating a dreamy spring atmosphere.
What Cherry Blossom Season Means in Stockholm
Every year in mid-April, Kungsträdgården transforms into a pink tunnel of sakura blossoms. It’s one of Stockholm’s most beloved spring traditions, drawing thousands of visitors, photographers, families, and tourists.
Cherry blossom season here:
Symbolizes the arrival of spring
Marks the end of long Scandinavian winter darkness
Brings people together under a canopy of soft pink petals
Creates one of the most photographed spots in Sweden
The blooming period usually lasts 1-2 weeks, depending on weather. Some years it’s early, some years late, but when it happens, the whole city feels different.

A Little History of Kungsträdgården’s Cherry Trees
The famous cherry trees in Kungsträdgården were planted in the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of a cultural initiative to strengthen ties between Sweden and Japan. Today, the park hosts:
63 Japanese sakura trees
Annual Cherry Blossom Festival (Körsbärsblommans Dag)
Cultural performances, food stalls, and traditional activities
Over time, the park has become a symbol of spring in Stockholm, a place where locals gather to celebrate beauty, renewal, and community.
Photography Tips for Cherry Blossoms in Stockholm
If you want the same experience, here’s what I learned:
Go early- very early (05:00–06:00)
Golden hour gives the best color and depth
Shoot upward to capture the full canopy
Use backlighting for glowing petals
Avoid weekends if you want fewer people
Check bloom status, it changes fast
Don’t be afraid to try different angles. One of my favorite shots came from a lower angle near the chessboard area in the park. Getting close to the ground allowed me to frame the blossoms with a unique perspective and create a more dramatic composition.
Respect the Space: During cherry blossom season, it’s important to be mindful of others who come to enjoy the same beauty. Try not to block the walking paths, avoid stepping on flower beds, and keep your noise level low during the early hours when the park is still quiet. And if you’re photographing, give space to other photographers so everyone can capture their moment without disturbance.
If you ever visit Stockholm in April, Kungsträdgården during cherry blossom season is a must‑see. Whether you go at sunrise like I did or join the crowds later in the day, the experience is unforgettable. But if you want the magic all to yourself…Set your alarm early. Trust me. it’s worth it.
